There seems to be a consensus among photographers that a lower angle is always best. I beg to differ slightly, even though I do use low angles often when I feel the image will benefit from it. But there are times when a slightly higher angle may be a better option, depending on what you… Continue reading A lower angle, is it always best?

An HDR heaven in Miami
One of Miami’s best kept secret it the Gold Coast Railroad Museum located at the entrance of Miami MetroZoo. For HDR aficionados, the place will be a treat. The museum has several lines of trains under one hangar, with four or five locomotives/cars, and more outside. These couple of images will give you an idea… Continue reading An HDR heaven in Miami
Bird Photography off the Beaten Path
Bird photography is my passion and has been for many years now. There is nothing like finding a bird you’ve wanted and then capturing an image of it, the way you had dreamed. Creating beautiful bird pictures can be very rewarding. However, sometimes we want even more by pushing the envelope a bit and creating… Continue reading Bird Photography off the Beaten Path
The old Boats
The quiet of the night was broken by the ripples of water, licking the bottom of the boats. The wood was cracked and the paint was peeling in parts of the bows. The wood was not as strong and flexible a it had been at one time, when many journeys up and down the stream… Continue reading The old Boats

We have been going to rodeos and bull riding events. Our first was a PBR at Ft Myers Germain Arena. The PBR has two different series with the top being Built Ford Tough Series and the other Touring Pro Division. The top five riders in the second division get to move to the top after… Continue reading Trip to a PBR event
Anatomy of a Mood
Sometimes the light permits us to create a moody image as we capture it. Others, however, we can use effects to create the mood ourselves, as I did with this one here. This is one exposure processed in Photomatix as a pseudo HDR, not too much grunge, because I was going for a soft look,… Continue reading Anatomy of a Mood
Taming that Harsh Light
Sometimes you have no choice but to work with very harsh light, as in the trip to Machias Sea Island. Th sunrise there in the summer is around 4:20AM, so by the time you are taken to your blind at 9AM, the sun angle is already high, and working with B&W, be it black to… Continue reading Taming that Harsh Light
HDRing old stuff
The main trick for HDR is to make sure you capture the whole tonal range in as few exposures as possible, to avoid ghosting, camera move, etc. If your darkest histogram has no clipped whites and your lightest histogram has no clipped blacks, you would have attained the whole tonal range. Do not overdo this.… Continue reading HDRing old stuff
The Moose is Loose
Maine reportedly has the biggest Moose populations of the country and a lot of them hang around the Moosehead Lake area. A pristine, unpopulated area where cell phone service is not always available and you travel by dirt roads only bothered by logging trucks that take the wooden gold out of the forests. Chris Young,… Continue reading The Moose is Loose
When you can’t land…
Machias Sea Island, a small rock island that serves as nesting ground for Atlantic Puffin, Razorbills, and other species, could be a rough destination. We booked two trips in case of inclement weather. Sure enough, the second trip, although we left port, the swells did not allow us to land and the trip had to… Continue reading When you can’t land…
